Chapter 17

Soon after Elizabeth crossed the stile in another part of Netherfield, Darcy and Bingley returned from their ride about the estate and the inspection that they had been conducting. They were about to step into Bingley’s study when a maid stopped them, “Excuse me, sirs. Miss Elizabeth is visiting with her sister and has requested a moment of your time when it is convenient.”

Bingley smiled, “Very well. Please ask her to join us right away and also ask my sister, Mrs. Hurst, to join us in the library as well.”

Darcy observed their clothing, “We really should change before we meet with Miss Elizabeth.”

His friend raised a brow at this, “I do not believe that Miss Elizabeth will mind a little dust. Come, man.”

Darcy sighed, “Very well.”

Bingley looked at his friend, “I do believe that Caroline has not upheld what she promised to do.”

Darcy raised a brow, “Surely you do not mean that your sister left Miss Bennet unattended last evening even though she had promised that she would care for the lady.”

Bingley slumped, “I am afraid that she might have done just that. I will await Miss Elizabeth to see how she finds her sister. Come, let us have a seat while we wait for the ladies to arrive.” Bingley shuffled paperwork around on his desk, “Darcy, I have letters here for you from your sister and the colonel. It appears that they were not delivered to your valet. How odd. Do you plan to invite your sister and the colonel to visit during your stay here?”

Darcy nodded, “Yes, I sent a letter to my sister informing her of my gaining permission to call on Miss Elizabeth the same day it was granted. I am hoping that she will be excited by this information. Do you mind if I read my letters while we wait? I do not wish to be rude.”

Bingley nodded for him to do so, “Of course, read your letters. I will just make legible notes of the things we discussed this morning.”

There was silence for the next several minutes. Darcy looked up, “It appears that my family has decided to join me tomorrow. Will Mrs. Hurst have enough time to accommodate them?”

Mrs. Hurst entered the room, “And whom would you need me to accommodate, Mr. Darcy?”

The gentlemen stood and bowed, “My apologies, Mrs. Hurst. I have just been informed that my sister and cousin will be arriving tomorrow. Will this cause you any problems?”

Mrs. Hurst smiled warmly, “No, sir, your family is welcome here and there is plenty of room. I will have Caroline assist me with the arrangements.”

Mrs. Hurst suddenly stopped at her brother’s voice, “Louisa, wait! Miss Elizabeth has asked to speak with either myself or Darcy upon our return and I was concerned and wanted you to join us to make certain that all was well with Miss Bennet.”

Mrs. Hurst raised a brow at her brother, “You seem overly concerned about Miss Bennet, Charles. Is there something I need to know?”

Darcy laughed when his friend blushed and hissed, “Some friend you are, laughing at me, Darcy.
